Hi Blog Explosion Traffic!
Hey all you people in BE land, I'm talking to you! I really like you or so I think.

However, I was kind of mad at the first person who rated my blog. They rated it a "4", so my blog was sitting on BE, with a 4 rating. And I thought, what the heck?

So I checked out the person who rated my site a 4. No wonder they had a problem with me. I had a problem with them! They had a movie review on their site, dissing Something's Gotta Give with Diane Keaton.

I knew then why they disliked me. We were two different people. I absolutely adored that movie! When I went to Paris, I passed by Plaza Athenee, the hotel where Jack Nicholson's character had stayed, just because it was in the movie. And I ate at Le Grand Colbert just because it had been Diane Keaton's character's favorite cafe in Paris. I mean that movie reached the depths of my soul. And this fellow blog explosions member dissed the heck out of it.

That being said, I checked my rating, and it's much higher now that a few nice people have rated it nice ratings. Including Surly, who left a nice message on my blog yesterday. I like Surly and I'm sure I'll like you too.

Now, I'm not begging for high ratings just for the sake of it. But as a rule, I don't tend to rate blogs unless I like them. Because #1, I might not know enough about the blog for me to give it a fair rating #2 they can see my name and track me down!! I'm just asking that I don't get "4" ratings. I find it hard to believe I suck that badly! If I do, sorry.

If you're from BE, don't be afraid to leave me a note. I won't bite. That is unless you don't like Something's Gotta Give. ;) just kidding. But hey, tell me about yourself or something. Favorite movie(s)?

This is what I think of BE rating. I gave a 10 to everyone from BE who rated me regardless of how they rates me (until they disabled the ability to see who rated you today). I give anyone from BE who leaves me a comment on my site a 10. It's just neighbourly I think, especially considering how arbitrary the system is. Do I get a '1' because I don't knit? Because I don't have a baby whose photos I plaster everywhere (which is just plain dangerous this day and age of you ask me)? Because I have a differing political view? Because I have an online name you just can't wrap your brain around?

The rating system is a very effective customer loyalty mechanism. If you rate, you feel involved. If you feel involved, you think you can influence. If you think you can influence (although rating doesn't affect traffic, DUH!), you feel ownership. If you feel ownership, you want to support BE (this I know because I made some unhappy people, who really should get a life, very angry over on my site very recently). How do you support BE? You surf and you rate in a self-perpetuating loop.

Add to that the rhythmic, hypnotising action of clicking every 30 seconds for credits and for mystery points, and it's a sure hit for the BE guys. They want as much surfing and as many new members as possible so they can show new and potential sponsors how successful they are. This brings them $$$. It is all very, very clever.

I rated Rancette 10/10, though, because I like the colours and because the reviews are great, even when I disagree (like that godawful Keaton/Nicholson nightmare. Please!). But basically, I think that personal blogs should not be rated except for in the reader's head.

Oh right: Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, Hero, In the Mood for Love, Monsoon Wedding, The Two Towers, The Empire Strikes Back, Finding Nemo, The Seventh Seal, All About Eve, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Hours, Far From Heaven, Jurassic Park (really!), Les invasions barbares, Le fabuleux destin d'Amelie Poulin, The Ring, Delicatessen, Wings of Desire (NOT the sucky American remake), Salaam Bombay, and maybe a few others.

I like your thinking. It's so nice ;)

I like Amelie & Eternal Sunshine too. A lot. And I have a fascination with The Hours. Even though a day into the life of V. Woolf is too short to gain a complete perspective, it urged me to read a bio about her.

ANyway, you're right. Just because you disagree w/someone or have different hobbies doesn't mean you should rate them a "4" or "1" etc.
