They have to choose between Janet Gaynor & Carmen-Kamila. A Spanish melodramatic movie, ESTRELLAS EN NUESTRAS OJOS (Stars in Our Eyes) with a man and a woman, RICARDO and JOANNA. JOANNA Oh Ricardo. RICARDO Oh Joanna! The train leaves tonight at six. JOANNA Why do we have to leave this place, Ricardo? Joanna dramatically sweeps her hand over her forehead. JOANNA (CONT'D) We fell in love here. I hate to leave all our memories behind. RICARDO I don’t like it either, but my love for you is inside my heart. No one can take it away. JOANNA It'll last forever. RICARDO I love you, I'll always love you. No matter where we go, you'll always be mine. Even if we meet with opposition. JOANNA Loving you has been a dream. Before my life was meaningless. The world was cruel. Now... RICARDO Now, all our suffering is through. As long as we have each other. JOANNA Oh Ricardo. Joanna embraces Ricardo. RICARDO Oh Joanna. They kiss. SCREEN READS: FIN CREDITS: CARMEN-KAMILA in big letters and ESTABAN ESCOBAR in much, much smaller letters. EXT. LAEMMLE FAIRFAX They walk out of the theater. Roxanna pauses in the hall. ROXANNA I really liked that movie. It's almost as if... PAUL If...? Roxanna imagines she and Paul are the actors and the scene repeats in the theater. Carmen-Kamila and Estaban Escobar are in the crowd. ROXANNA Oh Paul. PAUL Oh Roxanna! The train leaves tonight at six. ROXANNA Why do we have to leave this place, Paul? Roxanna dramatically sweeps her hand over her forehead. ROXANNA (CONT'D) We fell in love here. I hate to leave all our memories behind. PAUL I don’t like it either, but my love for you is inside my heart. No one can take it away. ROXANNA It'll last forever. PAUL I love you, I'll always love you. No matter where we go, you'll always be mine. Even if we meet with opposition. ROXANNA Loving you has been a dream. Before my life was meaningless. The world was cruel. Now... GIGI Keep your clothes brighter and your smile whiter with "Whistle Woosh" Gigi smiles. DIRECTOR Next! GIGI Oh please! I really need this job. DIRECTOR Get outta here! NEXT! ------ INT. ANOTHER AUDITION ROOM DIRECTOR So do that line again. Gigi opens her mouth to start. DIRECTOR But this time with your clothes off. Gigi runs out the door. - INT. HOTEL -- HOURS LATER Roxanna is dressed and she runs from the bathroom to get the hotel phone. The camera shows the back of her head only. Paul calls her from his cell phone, on set. PAUL Roxanna? ROXANNA Yes? PAUL The director says they're going 'til 4 o'clock in the morning. That's ten hours to go! ROXANNA But you're been gone all day. I got bored and... PAUL It's a flat rate of one hundred and fifty dollars. No overtime. ROXANNA Paul, they're robbing you. They're robbing us. PAUL I know. I'm walking off the set... ROXANNA Will they still pay you? PAUL Not if I don't stay. ROXANNA You have to stay 'til 4 A.M. We need the money. PAUL I'll try. Wait a sec. I have to “respond”. ROXANNA What? No, the David Lynch movie. PAUL (Faux Serious) Right, the one with the horses... Roxanna muffles wild laughter and the audience should be unable to tell whether she's laughing or crying. PAUL (CONT'D) I have to go! ROXANNA Wait I... The camera reveals Roxanna's face: every inch of it is covered in blue eyeshadow. The phone's dead. CUT TO: INT. HORROR MOVIE SET HORROR DIRECTOR I know this is L.A., but I don’t pay you to talk on the phone. PAUL I “responded” to the monster. I had to call my girlfriend. I thought we’d be done by now. HORROR DIRECTOR Your girlfriend. Well, isn’t that sweet. Paul realizes what a jerk this guy is, but he makes an effort to stick with the job. HORROR DIRECTOR (yells) Quiet! (beat) Shot twenty, take eight. A guy in a hairy gorilla mask stalks upon Paul and he “reacts” (looking scared, but not screaming). Creepy “swamp man”-like music should be playing. -- EXT. ECHO PARK PARK -- MORNING Roxanna and Paul take a walk one last time before leaving L.A. forever. They pass by Gigi, who is jogging and has no makeup on. Paul gives her a vague look of recognition. PAUL You look really familiar. GIGI Je desolee, I don’t know you… PAUL Gigi LaForme! GIGI Oui, but how do you know me? PAUL Wow, I can’t believe we ran into you actual seconds before we had to go back to San Diego. GIGI You live in San Diego? PAUL Oui! Oui! GIGI It’s my dream to live there. I went once and it’s exactly where I want to live one day if I get rich. PAUL Well, we’re from there. GIGI How exotic! I’m from Valciennes, a small town in France. PAUL Awesome. GIGI No, not really. I got out as soon as I could. I would’ve gone to Paris, but I wanted to be a movie star. PAUL You ARE a star in my book! GIGI Merci, but I’m really so far from realizing my dream. San Diego, wow, I wish I could go with you! PAUL We’re leaving in about ten minutes if you want to go with us! GIGI That would be great, but I have an audition at 2. I think this could be my lucky break, so I better stay. PAUL Well, visit us when you get the chance. We’ll show you around San Diego. GIGI I’d love that. PAUL Okay, we’d better get going, so see you later. Roxanna and Paul run to their car much in the same way they ran to their car when they were dying to get out of Orange County.
